Codebearers

An arrow with a small piece of worn parchment attached to it whizzed by, firmly planting itself in a tree.  A hooded figure raced over to see the message.

“They're on their way!” He shouted. “We have to move now if we want to beat them to the portal!” The small group quickly began to head out.

He led his horse next to his brother's. “Daniel, how do you know your source is good? I mean, you have already said that you don't know who's feeding the information.”

“It’s been right so far, David, and with what's at stake we can't afford not to take this latest tip seriously.” Daniel answered. “We have to find some way to get the information to the others in Solandria. Since we've barely managed to seal the main gateways there, we can't risk opening them.”

David sighed. “I just hope Commander Aaron will be able to hold the position. And that we're not walking into a trap." He reared his horse to halt everyone.

“Alright everyone, we'll be nearing the site in just a few minutes. Stay alert, be quiet, and stick to the plan.” He ordered. Everyone nodded in agreement. They dismounted and tied the horses up to some trees, then stealthily moved up towards what looked like a gateway made out of twisted tree limbs on top of a stone floor. There was a group of about twelve already by the gateway.

“David, you take Levy and Alice. Fall back and wait for my signal.” They did as ordered, taking cover in the thicket. Their white hoods helped them blend in with the snow, yet their hoods couldn't hide the soft glow emanating from beneath. Five glows each a different color, green, blue, red, purple, and gold. Daniel signaled to the person next to him and she signaled the others.

We're flashed forward to near the end of the attack.

Half the people formerly by the gate were now on their backs unconscious. The rest were in a defensive position keeping back their attackers.

Without warning the white hooded people dashed from their cover. A woman sang a few high notes, creating a shock wave that knocked down the two closest. David tossed her a satchel that appeared to be full of papers. She would have had it if not for the guy holding a bow-staff. He caught the bag by the handle on the end of his staff. An arrow made of light struck next to the guy.

“Drop it, Drake! Or I drop you!” shouted Alice in a tree. Drake slowly set the bag on the ground. It looked like they might actually win this.

“Now!” he shouted. Suddenly a girl appeared behind the one threatening him. She gave Alice a quick blow to the head. Alice fell face forward out of the tree into fresh snow. Daniel drew his blade and engaged Drake. David and Levy were finishing clearing a path to the gate, but once they saw what happened to Alice they rushed to check on her. Everyone appeared busy with their opponents. There was an opening. The woman who had failed to catch the satchel dashed for it.

Here's my chance, she thought as she slid under and past Daniel fighting with Drake. She grabbed the satchel, skidding to her feet, her heart racing almost as fast as she was. She was mere feet away from the gateway. The soft blue glow beneath her hood was now as bright as a star. A girl appeared by the gate and a young man staggered off the ground to his feet next to her, but she wasn't going to stop running. The branches that made the gate were now shining gold. There was a spark, then it burst into swirling colors. She ran past the two guarding the gate, but not before she received a solid blow on the back of her neck, rendering her unconscious as she slipped through the portal. The portal opened, dropping her into a lake surrounded by a snowy forest.

We zoom back to the exact moment we left.

" Jana! West! Through the portal! Now!" Drake shouted as he dragged them through.

Nathan woke up. Had it all been a dream? Or had it really happened? What did it mean?

Years have passed since the time of my father, Hunter Brown. Some things have changed and some stayed the same. The Author has blessed us with gifts, new abilities to be wielded for His glory. The Shadow have been pushed back and the war is non-existent. Still there are Shadows around Solandria that wreak havoc, destroying villages and some people's lives. It has been said that they also have new abilities. That is why we began to create academies to train Codebearers that will help keep Solandria safe. There are four main ones set up in central locations. There are also a few small ones set up here and there. Those are run by the people of the town. When you turn sixteen you are faced with the decision to come to an academy or do something else with your life. Not many people chose the life of a Codebearer, but when and if you do there are several stages in which you will be trained. You're given your first test immediately after joining. You go to the revealing room, which is one place new recruits are rarely allowed to go. There you go to receive your Veritas weapon and medallion. There is a passage way that leads to the armory from the revealing room. It is full of tests and challenges that help decide what you'll be given. Once you reach the end you may choose your weapon, but no one knows how it is decided what medallion you get. The Author always places it there. There are five different classes represented by different colored medallions. Red, green, blue, purple, and gold. Gold is the rarest class seen. Red means patience. Green means courage. Blue means peace. Purple means joy. Gold means faith. Afterwards it is strictly training until you either have learned enough to be passed on to the next stage, or you turn nineteen. Then you go on your first few missions accompanied by an instructor. If you do well, then you will be allowed to keep going on missions by yourself while continuing training. Usually by the time you reach twenty-four you are no longer considered a trainee, but a full-fledged codebearer warrior. Although it can be said that you never really stop learning new things. Then you become a messenger, an instructor, or a guardian.

Bio:   Tempest's parents were born and married in India, but when her mother learned of her child. Her parents moved to America to have their first and only child: Tempest.  Tempest lived a bit spoiled childhood, at least up until the age of 5, when she contracted a terrible disease.  Her rich parents went to all of the doctors, tried medicine after medicine, but Tempest only got worse.  In desperation, Tempest's parents flew her to India, and took her to the Shadow Doctor of her mother's village.  Through dark and gruesome methods, the Shadow Doctor pulled Tempest away from Death's door, but at a price.  Her parents had sold Tempest's soul for her life in Destiny.  In much gratefulness to this Shadow Doctor, the trio flew back to America, where Tempest continued to recover.  As tempest healed, however, a new threat arose: her.  Tempest then lived a very disturbed and traumatic the life the rest of her childhood, brutally murdering three pets, injuring four people, and burning down two houses.  On top of harming others, she also participated in many forms of self-harming, including cutting, burning, and electrocuting herself, which left scars and burns running rampant all across her body.  As soon as Tempest turned eighteen, she moved out of her house and away from her parents, holding a almost tangible grudge against them that she carried everywhere.  She suffered from underage drinking from ages sixteen through twenty, and was arrested on multiple occasions for Driving Under the Influence, Assault, Armed Robbery, and more.  Each time she was arrested, Tempest's ever-loving parents bailed her out of jail, but she still would not forgive them, or even recognize their presence in her life.  At age 23, she met a young man named Christian, who was a Codebearer, and had had a few adventures in Solandria himself. He had held Tempest captive with his tales.  He invited her to his youth group, and at first she turned down his offer, but he just kept asking and asking. Tempest reluctantly agreed to attend with him at age 23. Nothing dramatic happened the first few times, and after a few times Tempest started to feel more comfortable, even making a few friends, but there was always still that nagging dread in the back of her mind, and she never fully felt like she was fully "there," even when sober. On the seventh time, the Spirit was especially present, and the Shadow inside her could feel Him. The youth pastor approached her, noticing that she seemed a little off that evening.  As soon as he came close, she begun writhing under the hold of the Shadow, and the pastor begin to ask Aviad to come and remove the Shadow from her.  Soon, a group around her formed, some begging Aviad to help, others just looking on.  After a nightmarish ten minutes, the last Shadow within her left, but even then Tempest had no assurance that they would not come back, and she shared her fears with Christian.  He comforted her, sharing passage after passage with Tempest from the Author's Writ. This comforted her greatly, and she accepted the Author as her new, kind master, Aviad as her brother, and the Spirit as her new guide and source of power.  As soon as the youth group was over, Christian drove Tempest home to her parent's house, where she forgave and embraced her joyful and unbelieving parents.  Tempest shared of her liberation and new love a changed woman.  Because of this miracle, Tempest's parents also came to accept the Author and His mighty ways, and together they became official Codebearers a few weeks later. Christian shared his faith, and encouraged Tempest in hers. Tempest had no weapon, but Christian taught her speed, agility, the ability to blast away enemies, and more from the power of the Writ through the Spirit. One summer evening, while walking through the woods, Tempest saw a glowing moth flitting around the trees.  Intrigued, she followed the moth to a large tree, which captured her attention more than even the glowing moth. As she circled the tree, it seemed to split down the middle, revealing a forest much like her own, but different. She put her hand though the gap, and felt water running over her hand. Startled, Tempest tried to pull back, but the water held tighter and tighter, pulled her, beckoned her, until she fell though the portal face-first, getting a nice mouthful of dirt. A spear, stuck point-first in the ground, had letters carved in the handle at her eye-level. She read them: Opus erit tibi hoc. Tempest recognized the language of the words: Latin, which she had taken for three years and was quite fluent in. "You will need this," she translated out loud.  "Okaaaaayyyyy..." She muttered, pulling herself up by the long metal handle.  She pulled the embedded tip out of the ground, and the snowy land of Solandria engulfed her.  A battle waged around her between man and beast, between darkness and light.
